Two Reminders
It will be fringes for you—so that you will see it, and remember all Hashem’s commandments and perform them; and not explore after your hearts and after your eyes which cause you to go astray. So that you may remember and perform all My commandments and be holy to your G-d. (Bamidbar 15:39-40)
The Torah teaches about the mitzvah of tzitzis and explains its purpose clearly: “You will see it, and remember all Hashem’s mitzvos and do them.” In the next pasuk, the Torah seems to reiterate: “So that you will remember and do all My mitzvos.” Why the repetition of zechirah, remembering?
To appreciate the dual rememberings, it is first necessary to explain how exactly tzitzis serve as a reminder. Rashi explains that the gematria of the word tzitzis is 600. Add to that its eight strings and five knots, and the total equals 613—the exact number of mitzvos in the Torah. The tzitzis serve as a reminder to observe all of Hashem’s 613 mitzvos.
The Ramban suggests a different remez, focusing specifically on the thread of techeiles. He cites the Gemara (Menachos 43b), also mentioned by Rashi, explaining the techeiles color as a chain of visual reminders: “Techeiles resembles the sea; the sea resembles the sky; and the sky resembles the throne of Hashem’s glory.” According to the Ramban, the techeiles reminds us directly of Hashem Himself.
Perhaps we can understand how both interpretations are correct. The first mention of remembering, וראיתם אותו וזכרתם – you shall see the thread of techeiles and remember – connects with the Ramban’s explanation. Gazing at the techeiles, one’s thoughts are directed upward, toward the Kisei Hakavod. The techeiles reminder is there to nurture yiras Shamayim. The second mention of zechirah, למען תזכרו – so that you shall remember – relates to Rashi’s explanation. The tzitzis remind us of all 613 mitzvos.
The Torah is emphasizing that both reminders are needed. One without the other is incomplete. Contemplating the Kisei Hakavod while ignoring the 613 mitzvos is a failure of shemiras haTorah. The Chazon Ish in Emunah UBitachon (ch. 4) describes someone who is desecrating Shabbos while sweetly singing zemiros in honor of Shabbos. In his own mind he is in a state of deveikus, but while he sings, he is washing his hands through a window into a reshus harabim, which is blatant chillul Shabbos. Or, a person is eating fish lichvod Shabbos Kodesh, while separating the fish bones from the meat of the fish. That is chillul Shabbos! That is not doing the will of Hashem.
On the other hand, performing 613 mitzvos without an awareness of Hashem’s presence reduces them to empty routines. The Navi laments, “This nation… with its mouth and with its lips it has honored Me, yet it has distanced its heart from Me; their fear of Me is like rote learning of human commands” (Yeshayah 29:13).
The dual reminder in the tzitzis combines these two aspects: remembering taryag mitzvos and remembering Hashem Himself.

Adding is Subtracting
In a small town, there lived a man who was known for his great Torah scholarship. One day a distinguished visitor came to town, a famous parnes from another community. It was winter, when Friday nights are long. The scholar was delighted to meet the parnes and invited him for a visit in his home, Friday night after the seudah. The scholar was excited at the opportunity to welcome such an honored guest to his home and was waiting with anticipation for Friday night.
Friday night came and, as usual, the scholar ate the seudah after returning home from shul. As he was nearing the end of his seudah, he realized that he had forgotten to put extra oil into the lamp, and that in just a few more minutes the candle would burn out. The thought of his illustrious guest arriving to find a home plunged in darkness was unbearable, and under the intense pressure, he added oil to the candle. The Chazon Ish (Emunah U’Bitachon 4:6) presents this as an example of someone who has mastered the study of halachah, but because he has not invested in developing his character, will chas v’shalom stoop to the level of chillul Shabbos.
